چکیده

Georgina Gethin is HRB-Research Fellow, Department of Nursing and Midwifery, RCSI, Dublin, Ireland Wound healing is a complex, multifaceted process which is influenced by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The pH of the wound can affect many factors including oxygen release, angiogenesis, protease activity, and bacterial toxicity. Chronic non-healing wounds have an elevated alkaline environment. Healing occurs more readily in an acid environment. Current wound bed assessment is dependent on subjective evaluation with few diagnostic instruments available or suited to routine practice. Monitoring surface pH may provide a method of ‘measuring’ the condition of the wound bed and ultimately aid in determining the wound’s response to treatment.

The impact of Manuka honey dressings on the surface pH of chronic wounds.

Chronic non healing wounds have an elevated alkaline environment. The acidic pH of Manuka honey makes it a potential treatment for lowering wound pH, but the duration of effect is unknown. Lowering wound pH can potentially reduce protease activity, increase fibroblast activity and increase oxygen release consequently aiding wound healing. The aim of this study was to analyse the changes in surf...

Effect of limited access dressing on surface pH of chronic wounds

Aim: Changes in the pH of chronic wounds can inhibit the optimal activity of various enzymes in the wound environment, thereby delaying wound healing. The aim of the present study is to monitor the effect of limited access dressing (LAD) on the pH on the surface of chronic wounds. Methods: A total of 140 patients with chronic wounds of more than 4 weeks duration were divided into two groups by ...

Chronic Wounds in Burn Injury: A Case Report on Importance of Biofilms

According to the National Institutes of Health and the Center for Disease and Prevention, it is estimated that 65 to 80 percent of the human infectious are caused by biofilms. Antibiotics and drainage of purulent discharge are the main treatment measures. But in chronic infections sometimes these findings are not easy to recognize. Biofilm is an extracellular polymeric conglomeration generally ...
